A METAL detectorist is trying to find out more about some mysterious items he found in Hambrook.
David Upton, from Staple Hill, found two metal statuettes buried separately in a field he was searching with the landowner’s permission this summer.
One of them appears to be a boy holding a flute, pipe or scroll, and is mounted on a heavy base.
Mr Upton said: “I showed it to an antique dealer and he estimated it was made between 1650 and 1700.”
The other statuette appears to be a brass reproduction of a statue of Sir Francis Drake. The original stands in Plymouth, the city from where the Elizabethan vice-admiral sailed to meet the Spanish Armada in 1588.
It appears to be from the 20th century and has a printed inscription that says: “Ron White, A.B.C Plymouth.”
In another field nearby he found a bracelet and necklace, which appear to be costume jewellery.
Anyone who thinks they may know information about the origin of the statues can email news@downendvoice.co.uk, and the Voice will pass it to Mr Upton.
