BEES were the big winners when Downend Horticultural Society held its annual flower show.
The event at the Assembly Hall in Salisbury Road in August included an awareness-raising display for the Bee Friendly Trust, a charity dedicated to bee conservation and habitat preservation, which gives advice on helping pollinators.
Bee identification information and a list of bee-friendly plants that can be grown year-round in the garden was on display.
The charity also benefited from the sale of crocheted bumblebee lavender bags made by society chair Andrea Cross.
The show attracted a large number of entries across a variety of competition categories.
The winners, who each received garden centre vouchers, were:
House Plants – Julie Thorn with an umbrella (Cyperus) plant, grown from a cutting made at a society workshop.
Vegetables – Suzie Davis, elephant garlic.
Fruit – Andrea Cross, Victoria plums.
Flower arrangement – Jackie Kite, garden flowers.
Produce – Sandra Philips, rhubarb and custard cake.
A quiz held on the night was won by Suzi Davis.
Andrea said: “A raffle, tea, coffee and cake rounded off a very enjoyable evening.
“Thank you to all those who supported us (and the bees) and see you next year!”
