ONE in four A-level results achieved by Winterbourne Academy students this summer were at the top two A* or A grades.
The school said 25% of A-level grades were A*-A, 52% were A*-B and 75% A*-C, while students on vocational courses achieved Distinction* or Distinction grades in 52% of BTEC diplomas awarded.
Leaders at Winterbourne, which has many young people from Downend, Frenchay, Emersons Green and Lyde Green among its pupils, highlighted “huge successes” in English literature and further maths A-levels, where 50% of grades achieved were A*-A, and maths, where 40% of grades were A*-A.
In sport, 62% of BTECs were at the top Distinction* level, with 40% of engineering diplomas also at Distinction*.
Head teacher Jenny Cartwright said: “Congratulations to our students this year on such well-deserved results.
“I know that the students and the wonderful teachers and pastoral staff at Winterbourne have worked so hard together to make these possible.
“There are individual triumphs at all levels of achievement this year, with many students who have stayed focused in challenging circumstances in order to secure their outcomes. I am proud of all of them!”
Post-16 leader and assistant head teacher Charlie Peake said: “These results are a true reflection of all the hard work and dedication they have put in over the past two years.”
Among the students whose results were highlighted by the school were:
• Emma Brown, who achieved 2 A* grades in psychology and criminology and a Distinction* in sport, who has a place at Bristol University to study psychology.
• Alfie Campbell – 3 A* in business, English literature and religious studies, studying law at London School of Economics.
• Monty Claydon – 2 A* in drama and English literature, B in history, studying English and theatre studies at Warwick University.
• Olly Eames – A* in maths, 2A chemistry and further maths, B in Physics, studying physics at Birmingham University.
• Max Evans – 3 A* business, economics and maths, studying economics and management at Oxford University.
• Olivia Lane – A* history, 2A biology and chemistry, studying biomedical sciences at Birmingham University.
• Chloe Oldham – 2A* maths and further maths, 2A chemistry and physics, studying maths and physics at Bristol University.
• Daniel Rawling – 2A* in chemistry and maths, 2A in biology and further maths, studying medicine at Birmingham University.
• Rhys Roberts – A* maths, 2A in further maths and physics, B economics, studying aerospace engineering at Nottingham University.
• Joe Saville O’Dea – 3A*s in maths, further maths and physics, studying maths at Warwick University.
• Holly Wishart – 3A* English literature, psychology and sociology – studying psychology at Exeter University.
