PAGE Park Bowls Club members put on fancy dress for a day of fun, games and raising money.
The club held its Captain’s Day barbecue in late September.
Club Captain Don Willcox said: “There was a fantastic response from our, supposedly mature, membership.
“The weather was kind and we had enjoyable game whilst raising, on the day, £400 for local charities.”
Meanwhile member Sarah Pattenden made club history by winning championships in two separate counties in a single year.
Sarah, of Coalpit Heath, won Bristol City & County Bowls Association’s ladies singles championship to add to her Gloucestershire ladies (unbadged) singles championship.
She took up bowls after taking part in the Page Park beginner’s course two years ago.
Sarah, 64, said: “I played a number of sports in school and continued afterwards.
“I went to Page Park beginners training in 2023, to see if I liked the game and hoped to take it up.
“Page Park Bowls Club is so friendly and inclusive, with excellent coaches, that I felt immediately at home there and enjoyed the bowling experience.
“Everyone is so friendly and encouraging that I felt this was a club and sport that I would enjoy.
“I am competitive when playing sport and enjoy the competition that can come with playing Lawn Bowls.
“There are plenty of internal and external competitions to enter if you want, or just to play friendly ladies or mixed games.
“Once I thought I was capable enough, I entered as many competitions as I could, to gain experience and learn the game as I went along.
“Bowls is an excellent game to play, at what ever level people want to play it.”
After winning four internal club contests last year, this year Sarah also entered four external competitions, taking part in pairs matches run by the North East Bristol and Bristol & City associations in addition to her singles wins.
Don said: “Winning championships in two different counties in the same year is a feat never before accomplished in the 75-year history of our club.
“Fingers crossed there will be more future champions on next year’s beginners’ course!”
