DOWNEND Flyers have enjoyed a memorable month, combining strong performances across all senior teams with a moment in the TV spotlight!
The BBC visited a training session to film a feature in support of the UK’s bid to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup.
With more than 400 members and 27 teams, Downend Flyers is the largest female football club in the region, and the coverage highlighted the strength of its pathway and the supportive community that surrounds it.
Coaches, players, and volunteers all helped showcase the club’s inclusive spirit, giving viewers a real sense of what makes the Flyers such a special place to play and develop.
On the pitch, November brought a mix of challenges and momentum building performances across our women’s teams.
The First Team continued to show resilience, putting in competitive displays both home and away and maintaining steady progress in league and cup competitions.
Their performances have been consistent, displaying amazing team spirit the ability to respond well in tight, hard fought matches.
The Reserves experienced a month of real contrasts, a reminder of both the competitiveness of their league and the potential within the squad.
While they faced tough opposition early in the month, the team responded brilliantly under new head coach Matt Smith, with a confident 5-2 victory against Stoke Lane that underlined their quality and capability when everything comes together.
The A Team, featuring several players in their first year of women’s football after progressing through the Flyers’ youth ranks, also enjoyed a period of impressive development.
Their performances showed growing confidence and maturity, including an eye-catching 3-0 victory against Lydney Town – one of the league’s in-form sides – and a 2-1 cup victory.
The pathway from youth to adult football continues to be one of the club’s greatest strengths.
Despite weather disruptions and the usual challenges of the winter schedule, the overall trend across the club has been overwhelmingly positive: growing belief, improving performances, and a real sense of momentum.
With TV recognition, a thriving family feel, and exciting progress on the pitch, Downend Flyers continue to fly the flag for women’s football in the local area.
The club welcomes supporters to come along on Sunday afternoons at Pomphrey Hill to cheer on the teams. All are welcome at Downend Flyers!
