THE head of one of Downend’s schools has praised the area’s libraries for helping children “develop confidence, independence, and a genuine love of reading”.
Christ Church Infants head teacher Anna Martin says local schools are “incredibly lucky” to have both Downend and Staple Hill libraries on the doorstep.
The school organises at least two visits per year to one of the libraries for each of its eight classes, supported by volunteers who help walk the children to the libraries and support each visit.
Mrs Martin said: “A huge part of what makes these visits so special is the people. The librarians are fantastic: warm, knowledgeable, and patient. They take the time to talk with our children, recommend books, and help them feel confident as readers. They make every visit feel like an event.
“In a world where so much competes for children’s attention, our local libraries offer something priceless: free access to stories, knowledge, and a quiet place to explore imagination.”
