Flyers ready for take-off

DOWNEND Flyers have welcomed experienced coaches and the return of under-18s football as the new season approaches.

The Women’s 1st team warmly welcomes Kyle Edwards as its new manager.

A UEFA B licence-holder, he brings a wealth of expertise from a coaching career spanning professional clubs, academies, and regional talent centres.

As the 1st team enters its 20th consecutive year in the South West Regional Women’s Football League, Kyle’s arrival sets a clear, ambitious tone for the squad’s next chapter.

Reserve Team manager Matt Smith, who is UEFA C-licensed, returns to lead the side in the Gloucestershire County Women’s League Division Two, joined by new assistant player-manager Vic, whose extensive playing experience will add valuable insight both on and off the pitch.

Steve Poole takes over as A team manager following five years of coaching at Downend.

Having guided many of his players from youth setups into senior football, Steve is uniquely positioned to lead the group as they look to build on a highly competitive run last season.

The new season also marks the return of U18s football at the club after an absence of over a decade. This new side creates a crucial bridge between youth and adult football, giving rising talent a clear, structured pathway into senior competition.

In the girl’s section the U12 Swifts had a great summer of tournaments, winning five cups, one plate and finishing as runners-up three times.

The girls always show unbelievable spirit and stand-out performances, often finding a way to win but staying humble.

They are coached by Carla Reese and Kasha Kelly, who are proud to be an all-female coaching team.

With over 400 players ranging from age five to (nearly!) 50, the club remains dedicated to empowering women and girls through sport.

Matchdays at Pomphrey Hill bring players, families, and supporters together, with that strong community spirit continuing after the final whistle at the sports bar – why not come down and become our newest fan?
