SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has stopped accepting fridges or freezers for disposal at recycling centres.
The council will also not collect the appliances through its bulky item service, unless the collection was booked before August 5.
Announcing the temporary change, the authority said it was because of “a national shortage of recycling capacity”.
Earlier in the year the council had warned that fridge and freezer recycling might have to be suspended for the same reason.
It has advised residents whose old fridge or freezer is still in working order to consider selling it, giving it away or offering to donate it to a charity or community group.
Anyone who is buying a new appliance is being urged to check whether the retailer can dispose of their old one, or to store the old one safely until recycling can resume.
The council said: “We will provide an update as soon as the situation changes.”
An earlier suspension of accepting lead acid batteries, such as car batteries, at Sort It centres has now been relaxed.
The council temporarily stopped accepting them while changes to storage arrangements were made.
