DOWNEND Horticultural Society members took on heatwave conditions – both through the summer and on the night – to hold their annual flower show.
The event at the Assembly Hall in Salisbury Road was attended by members and visitors, who were able to vote for the best entries in each of the show’s six categories.
The society was founded in 1943, and first held a flower show in 1948.
Society chairman Andrea Cross said: “Despite the challenging weather this year, our members managed to capitalise on those plants which did grow, and put on a good cross section of produce from our gardens displayed for us all to see.
“We had 18 entries this year, although attendance was down owing to the heat.”
The star exhibitor was Yvonne Swinney, who won the Single Bloom category with a single stem from an achillea plant, the Flower Arrangement section with crocosmia and other decorative plants, and the Houseplant prize with a sempervivum (houseleek).
The other winners were Jackie Kite, who won the Fruit section for her plate of passion flower fruit, John Parker, who won the Vegetable category with a matched plate of tomatoes, and Andrea herself, who won the Home-cooked Produce section with her chilli and apple jelly.
Julie Thorn won the show’s garden-related quiz.
