MEMBERS of Downend Women’s Institute have produced a new Remembrance tribute for the postbox outside the post office in Downend Road.
The design, crafted by Vanessa Martin, features a cross gravestone with three helmets: an RAF airman’s helmet, complete with goggles, made by Kathy Paramore; a Royal Navy helmet made by Vanessa Martin and an Army helmet, created by Suzzie Belcher.
The felt work was done by Carol Davies.
Around 2,000 metres of yarn have been crocheted and knitted for the new tribute display, which took about two months to complete.
The design was unveiled at the end of October, and new WI branch president Linda Russ spoke to passers-by about the design and accompanying fundraising campaign.
This year, Downend WI is fundraising for Suicide Prevention UK (SP-UK), an award-winning charity dedicated to supporting those struggling with mental health and suicidal thoughts, and has placed a QR code on the display for people to make donations by phone.
The charity runs the National Suicide Prevention Helpline on 0800 689 5652, as well as social media and community outreach work.
