Pavilion is put in its place

DOWNEND’S new pavilion has been installed on King George V playing field.

Contractors used a huge crane to lower the individual parts of the modular building into place between November 12 and 14.

They are due to spend four weeks fitting out the building, connecting it to electricity and water supplies.

Parish clerk Kevin Spratt described the process of fitting the modules together to complete the building as like putting together a “big jigsaw”.

Groundworks to create car parking, access paths and landscaping around the pavilion will start in early December and is expected to continue into the New Year.

Although an opening date for the pavilion has not yet been confirmed – it is expected to be some time in the spring of next year – Mr Spratt said there had already been provisional enquiries from people about booking rooms for activities such as yoga and Pilates.

Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council voted to replace the old pavilion, at an estimated cost of around £1.25 million, last year.

The decision followed a public consultation and impassioned debate at council meetings over a proposal to apply for a £400,000 loan to meet the rising costs of the project.
