March 2025: Letters

Join us helping air ambulance

Tony Joiner, Pete Crossman, Lizzie Corrigan and Dave Gibbs are raising money for Great Western Air Ambulance.

WE are a group of four retired magistrates from the Bristol and old North Avon benches, who live locally.

A few years ago, we got together to raise funds for charities and, with the support of our partners and followers, have been very successful.

We are grateful to Bristol Carpets, who are always very generous in sponsoring our events.

We are currently supporting the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, with an event on Sunday March 9 at 12.30pm, at Bristol Indoor Bowls Club in South Liberty Lane, Ashton Gate.

Why not join us, enjoy a buffet lunch and listen to retired Detective Sergeant Rob Jones telling us about his involvement in the case of John Cannan?

His talk, ‘A Serial Killer – My Part in His Downfall’ promises to be a riveting account, not to be missed, for £17.50 per person.

For registration forms email lizcorrigan1@hotmail.co.uk with the heading “Mags 4 Charity Events”.

In November, 55 guests enjoyed a luncheon at Bristol Indoor Bowls Club entertained by auctioneer Toby Pinn, who talked about the art of valuation and valued the tabletop treasures guests brought with them. The event raised more than £500 for GWAAC.

At Christmas we delivered hampers to six local pubs to be raffled, raising over £1,000.

A huge thank-you to pubs: The Cross Hands, Ring-o-Bells, White Lion, Lamb, White Horse and George & Dragon.

How eConsult works

A HOT topic among Downend Health Group patients currently is the introduction of the eConsult online booking system for requesting clinical appointments.

The eConsult team comprises seven administrators, all trained in care navigation.

When you submit your eConsult the members of the team have to ensure that patients receive a response to their requests within the promised time frame.

The team work together with a supporting GP from a first-floor office based at our Willow surgery.

On average, Downend Health Group receives 300 requests for clinical appointments every day.  One day during the recent flu outbreak there were over 500.

The eConsult may seem lengthy but the more information they have, the more likely it is you will be directed to the right service within the right time frame.

If you do not have access to IT to complete the eConsult and want an appointment, you can phone reception and tell them.

Your name will be then passed on to a delegated team member, who will ring you back and complete the form on your behalf.

The next meeting of the DHG Patient Participation Group will be on Thursday April 3 at 4pm, at Christchurch Medical Practice.

Support parent carers

SOUTH Glos Parent Carers are celebrating our 15th year of supporting parent carers of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

From our humble beginnings in 2009, when our parent carer forum was set up by me and two other mums, we’ve grown into a robust team of 22, supporting a vibrant parent carer community of more than 3,400 members.

The last 15 years have seen a lot of changes in our organisation but its heart and purpose have remained the same: to grow a well-informed, empowered, supportive community of SEND families, and to represent the collective voice of our community, working with service providers to achieve positive change.

We recently set ourselves an ambitious fundraising target of raising £15,000 to help us achieve our dream of reaching all families across South Glos who have a child or young person with an additional need or disability.

Anything you give will help us greatly – every penny helps us to run our support groups, workshops and open our Community Base.

If you are interested in getting involved, you can email SGPC15@sglospc.org.uk, donate at tinyurl.com/y39prkpk or find out more at www.sgpc.org.uk

Thank you for supporting hospital

COSSHAM Hospital League of Friends’ Christmas table sale made £2,165 for this hospital.

We would like to a huge thank-you to all the people who have supported us, not only at Christmas but throughout the year, which has enabled us to buy the following equipment:

Three easy chairs for a new psychology clinic; full-body phototherapy canopies, a super polarised dermatoscope and daylight photodynamic therapy light for treating skin conditions in the dermatology department; two wheelchairs for the renal unit.

Without the patients’ and public’s support none of these purchases would have been possible.
