CHILDREN at a Downend infant school have been bringing joy to residents of a neighbouring care home and learning some life lessons.
The Christ Church Infant School pupils are visiting Britannia Court Retirement Home in North Street, just behind the school’s back entrance, to read with and talk to the elderly people living there.
The most recent visitors to the home were Year 1 and 2 children from Cheetah Class, who made cards and took their books along before the school holidays.
Head teacher Anna Martin said: “We try to give back to the local community and to teach the children that we should have a shared responsibility to the community we live in.
“One resident said that it had absolutely brightened up her day and made her think about her own grandchildren, who she misses.
“Our school day and curriculum is very full, but we see it as our responsibility to give back to the community that we feel lucky to be in.
“If our children can help to bring a smile to others whilst learning about showing care and love to everyone, then that feels like a very worthwhile use of our time, and the children and residents really value this.”
