DOWNEND Flyers FC has just hit an incredible new milestone, with over 400 playing members for the first time in the club’s history!
It wasn’t a target, but this achievement speaks volumes about the strength and spirit of female football in our community.
From the youngest girls (aged five) taking their first steps into the game to experienced players competing across Bristol and beyond, the Flyers family continues to grow and thrive.
Founded back in 1992 by local legend Sue Hiscox, who still sits proudly on the club’s committee today, Downend Flyers has become a true cornerstone of the community.
What started with just six girls has now become the largest all-female football club in the West, boasting three women’s teams and an incredible 24 girls’ teams.
Sue said: “It’s truly fantastic — beyond words.
“I’m so proud of everyone. From my six girls in 1992 to 406 now – just wonderful.”
In the Autumn Cup, Flyers sides shone brightly, with four cup winners out of five age groups – a phenomenal result!
Huge congratulations go to the Under-7 Crows, Under-8 Kingfishers, Under-10 Falcons and Under-11 Swifts for lifting their trophies.
Higher up the age groups, the success continues.
Several teams have enjoyed strong starts to their league seasons after earning promotions last year — including the Under-13 Jays and Under-13 Rooks.
Meanwhile, the Under-15 Harriers and Under-16 Dragons are flying high with 100% winning records so far.
The Flyers’ trademark purple shirts have become a familiar sight on pitches across the region, a proud symbol of inclusion, teamwork, and community spirit.
Whether it’s the roar of the crowd on match day or the smiles at training on a rainy Thursday night, there’s something special about being part of the Flyers family.
Every player, parent, coach, and volunteer has helped the club reach this moment. It’s a milestone built on dedication, laughter, and a shared love of the game.
As the club looks ahead, one thing’s for certain: the future is bright, the future is purple!
