School celebrates culture

MANGOTSFIELD School celebrated the diversity of its community with its fourth annual Culture Week.

Planned by the school’s student leadership team, with support from staff, the event included activities and competitions including a challenge to greet each other by saying “hello” in languages they had learned during the spring term.

A ‘bake off’ event, judged by head teacher Hetty Blackmore, saw some imaginative entries including a Union Jack cake, and canteen staff prepared special menus featuring cuisines from around the world.

A celebration day at the end of the week saw students encouraged to wear the colours of their national flag or traditional cultural dress, in return for a donation to charity.

There were lunchtime performances from two Year 11 dance groups, and activities including a photo booth and face painting.

More than £500 in total was raised for the school’s chosen charity, Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Blackmore said: “The week celebrates the school’s many different cultures, with over 40 languages from around the world spoken by students.

“Several of the world’s major religions are also practised within the school, making the event a true reflection of the community’s rich diversity.

“Culture Week was a wonderful success, highlighting the strength, diversity, and unity of the Mangotsfield School community.”
