DOWNEND Flyers are celebrating a season of success for teams across the women’s and girls’ football club.
The women’s First Team secured their place in the South West Regional Women’s Football League with an impressive 2-0 home victory over Gloucester City Reserves, ensuring the side will continue competing at regional level next season.
The women’s Reserve Team also had plenty to celebrate following a fantastic 6-1 win against Cinderford Town, securing an excellent fourth-place finish in the Gloucestershire County Division 2. It has been a hugely positive season for the squad under the guidance of Matt Smith, in his first season coaching women’s football. His leadership and ability to bring the team together has been evident throughout the year.
There was more success for the Women’s A Team, who ended their season in style with a remarkable 12-0 victory over Ashton Keynes. The result secured a solid mid-table finish and highlighted the strength and depth developing throughout the club.
The Under-15s Harriers enjoyed another memorable campaign, narrowly missing out on back-to-back Division A titles. Despite battling hard and showing tremendous sportsmanship and dignity throughout, the side lost a top-of-the-table clash 3-1 away at Hutton, confirmed the title for the hosts.
There is no doubt the team will return even stronger next year.
Tournament season is now underway and the club has already enjoyed a hugely successful start, securing no fewer than six pieces of silverware during the opening weekend.
Younger age groups continue to enjoy the fun, friendship and non-competitive spirit that tournament football brings.
Good luck to all Flyers teams taking part in tournaments over the coming weeks: the club’s own annual tournament takes place on June 27 and 28, and is always one of the highlights of the local football calendar.
