Saints lift League Cup

DOWNEND Saints Under-18s marked the end of their youth football careers by lifting the Bristol Combination U18 League Cup.

It was one of two cup finals the team, which plays in the Bristol U18 Combination Division 1 after recent back-to-back promotions, played in May.

First they beat several teams who compete at a much higher level – including Manor Farm, AEK Boco and Longelevens – on their way to the Gloucestershire FA U18 Youth Shield final, also known as the County Cup.

The Saints were once again underdogs against Hallen, and lost 4-0 – but they went into the League Cup final three days later as favourites.

Taking on Warmley at Yate Town’s Lodge Road ground, Jonny Everett and Charlie Smith scored as the Saints won 2-0 to lift a trophy in their last ever game together as a team.

U18s manager Tom Magee, who has managed many of the players since U11 level, said: “We lifted it a little enthusiastically and the handle came off!

“Almost the whole team are going on a lads holiday to Malia later in July, which shows the bond they share.”

Saints chairman Steve Hunter said: “Many of these boys have been together since the age of four, representing either Bromley Heath or Downend Saints.

“When the teams came together in 2023 to form our first Under-18s side in many years, it quickly became clear that this was a special group with a strong bond and a shared commitment.

“Under the leadership of coaches Tom, Tony, David, and Kevin, the team has flourished—not just in terms of results, but in the way they have carried themselves.

“Our core values of fair play and inclusivity are not just words; they are reflected in the actions of these young men week in, week out.

“Many have given back to the club by coaching and refereeing younger age groups, setting a fantastic example and acting as true role models for those following in their footsteps.”
