Students enjoy Riviera trip

GCSE students from Downend School put their language skills to real-life use on a five-day residential trip to the French Riviera.

A group of 62 Year 10 pupils had daily lessons at a language school before heading out on daily excursions to a beach, the medieval hilltop village of Eze, Monaco, Nice, Village des Fous adventure park and harbour town of Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Head of Languages Catherine Love said: “The exciting programme of excursions gave students the opportunity to put their French into practice in real-life situations while exploring some of the most beautiful locations on the Côte d’Azur.

“The evenings proved just as memorable as the excursions, with karaoke, quizzes, dancing, waffles and crêpes, helping to create what was described as ‘the best energy and motivation ever’.

“As well as a memorable karaoke rendition of Billie Jean by one student that received a standing ovation, 2026 saw notable progress in French from all students, with 14 reaching the highest GCSE level standard (A2) in specific aural skills, as well as incredible levels of student engagement, motivation and support.”

The pupils took part in team challenges and were awarded prizes for the best use of French language.

At the end of the trip they were given certificates recognising their achievements in French language studies.

Ms Love said: “It was an absolute delight to see students developing their language skills, broadening their horizons and discovering new things with such enthusiasm.

“Students lived out Downend School’s PRIDE values of participation, respect, identity, determination and excellence throughout the visit.

“They embraced every aspect of the trip with motivation, positivity and maturity, making the Monaco GCSE French trip 2026 a resounding success.”
