WORK to install CCTV cameras on the Bristol and Bath Railway Path is now underway.
South Gloucestershire Council announced in July that work had begun to mount 20 permanent cameras on columns between Staple Hill Tunnel and the former Mangotsfield Station.
The work is due to be finished by August 17.
The council first unveiled plans for the cameras on the path, to help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, in 2024.
Earlier this year it was confirmed that the West of England Combined Authority would spend more than £450,000 to fund the cameras and improve the path at nine “pinch points” between Siston Common and Warmley station.
An extra column at Warmley Waiting Room, with two CCTV cameras, is also being installed.
A public consultation was held last year and the council has spoken with Bristol Cycling Campaign and others about the plans.
The council says light machinery will be in use on the affected stretch of path, which will be temporarily narrowed at various locations where the cameras are being put up.
A spokesperson said: “While there may be some minor disruption for path users, the route will remain open.These locations have been carefully selected in response to reports of antisocial behaviour and criminal activity, helping to improve safety and security for everyone using the path.Thank you for your patience while these important improvements are carried out.”
The work comes after police carried out an operation against illegal electric scooters on another stretch of the path. Officers stopped e-scooter users on the path through Fishponds.
A police spokesperson said: “As part of the operation, several warning letters were issued to riders found using e-scooters illegally.Please be aware that privately owned e-scooters cannot be used on public roads, pavements or cycle paths and may be seized by police.
