National awards for school

MANGOTSFIELD School has received two national awards recognising its work with families and commitment to student and staff well-being.

The Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA) and the Wellbeing Award for Schools were awarded after the school’s Ofsted inspection, which highlighted the relationships school leaders have built with parents and the wider community.

The LPPA recognises schools that engage families in their children’s education and was made after a verification visit in July.

It highlighted the school’s Community Hub, which includes a food bank and uniform exchange scheme.

The assessor also praised the school’s ‘Take 5′ initiative, encouraging staff to make more positive contact with families, and holding information sessions at different times for families who can’t make parents’ evening appointments.

School award lead James Gilpin said: “Staff are more understanding and proactive of the importance of being in touch with parents in a positive way.”

The three-year Wellbeing Award for Schools recognises schools that place mental health and well-being “at the heart of their culture and practice”. It highlighted the work of the school’s ‘change team’, who consulted staff, students and parents to build a strategy including a student-led mental health and well-being fair and listener schemes.

Assistant head teacher Gareth John said: “Wellbeing has always mattered to us at Mangotsfield, but this process gave us the framework and rigour to make sure we’re focusing on the right things in the right way. Seeing that reflected in the feedback from staff, students and parents has been really rewarding, and we’re already looking at how we build on it.”

Head teacher Hetty Blackmore said: “I’m extremely proud of what these two awards represent. “This reflects years of dedicated work by our staff, students and families, and it’s the beginning of our journey, not the end of it.”
