Uni trip inspires pupils

STUDENTS from Mangotsfield School met a Paralympic athlete, held an Olympic torch and a gold medal during a visit to Bath University’s sports campus.

The Year 8 pupils were invited to a special Commonwealth Games-themed event giving them the chance to play netball, basketball, tennis and athletics, working with specialist sports coaches from Team Bath.

CSET sports partnership lead Naomi Clipston said: “A particular highlight was meeting Stephanie Millward, who spoke to the students about her incredible journey in swimming at the highest level.

“Stephanie shared her inspiring story, including her experiences and achievements as a Paralympic athlete.

“The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to pass around an official Olympic torch and, even more excitingly, to hold Stephanie’s Rio 2016 Paralympic gold medal.

“Our students were absolutely brilliant throughout the day. They were polite, respectful and hard-working across all the activities and represented the school incredibly well.”

Student Leo Elezi said: “My favourite part of the trip was being able to play basketball! The repetitive sound was quite enjoyable and I also managed to land a shot first try!”

Mayhas Suthkaran said: “The campus was massive and it was so good to play sports in the amazing facilities. The gym was cool.”
