Legion marks centenary ahead of parade

DETAILS have been confirmed for this year’s Remembrance Day parades and services in Staple Hill and Mangotsfield.

The annual events to honour those who gave their lives in conflict will take place on Sunday November 9.

The Staple Hill parade will form up on Page Road from 10am and veterans, military personnel, uniformed organisations and dignitaries will join members of the community in a march from 10.20am along the High Street and Broad Street, to the war memorial at Page Park.

The parade will be led by the Staple Hill Salvation Army band, which will also accompany the hymns at the traditional Remembrance service around the park’s war memorial, which includes hymns, the Last Post and two-minutes’ silence at 11am.

The local service and parade is organised by Staple Hill & Mangotsfield Parish Council, with support from Staple Hill Salvation Army and Staple Hill & District Royal British Legion.

The Mangotsfield service takes place at the war memorial in Alec Large park.

It starts at 12.30pm and is organised by Mangotsfield Residents Association.

It will be led by community pastor and MRA chair Clive Heath, and Rev James Cannan from St James Church.

Both outdoor services have seen increasing attendance in recent years, with hundreds of people coming to each of them to pay their respects.

More information on both events can be found online at www.staplehillrbl.org.uk/remembrance, where people can also download an order of service for Staple Hill.

In October the Staple Hill & District Royal British Legion continued its centenary celebrations with a ball at Page Community Association.

The event included a banquet, swing band and presentation of an award to branch chair Ian Campbell in recognition of his service to the organisation.

Afterwards Ian said: “We celebrated our centenary in style, and what a celebration it was!

“Our annual ball had a glamorous 100th birthday makeover, and it couldn’t have been a more special evening.

“A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, and an extra shout-out to AHM Catering Experience, RichMcD Photography, and our fantastic band, Swing That Music, for making the night truly unforgettable.

“Here’s to the next 100 years!”
