Nativity scene for postbox

SIX members of knitting and crochet group Downend Yarn Busters have put more than two months’ work into creating a Christmas scene for the high street.

The Nativity scene on top of the postbox outside Downend Post Office in Downend Road went on display on December 13.

Tanya Phillips, Tina Jefferies, Caroline Smith, Karen Jukes, Ann Wilde and Suzzie Belcher started work on the display in October, creating a stable, with Mary, Joseph and Jesus in a crib surrounded by shepherds, wise men and angels, with a donkey, sheep, camels, palm trees, straw and a star.

Suzzie said she had built the stable framework with “stability advice” from AI program Chat GPT before the whole scene was stitched together and placed on the postbox.

She said: “We each have other projects of our own to do, but we have found that October, November and part of December is consumed with creativity for the topper.

“We choose and adapt patterns, and sometimes make it up as we go along.

“We are already thinking about what to do for next Christmas!”

The group is hoping the double postbox will not be part of a national upgrade programme to accept parcels, which would involve installing a solar panel on top for the powered parcel draw.
