Bears host rugby stars of the future

YOUNG players from 22 rugby clubs from across the South West had a taste of competitive action and a professional environment at an event hosted by Premiership side Bristol Bears.

Mangotsfield-based Cleve and Dings Crusaders, of Frenchay, were among the clubs who sent sides to the Defender Rising Stars Cup at Bristol Grammar School’s Failand Sports Ground, in March.

The annual Under-11s and Under-12s festival is one of a series of nationwide events, and was hosted by Bristol Bears in partnership with PREM Rugby to help develop the grassroots game.

A spokesperson for PREM Rugby said: “It was a day of competitive rugby which showcased the passion and commitment of the game’s next generation of players.

“For many of the youngsters, it was their first time stepping onto a club pitch. Cheered on by proud parents and coaches, the teams played with determination, flair, and a real sense of camaraderie.”

Organisers said the U11 teams were judged on rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, focusing on development and participation rather than match results.

The U12 teams had a competitive tournament which was won by Old Bristolians.

Bristol Bears stars Fitz Harding and Benhard Janse van Rensburg presented prizes at an awards ceremony at the end of festival.

Fitz said: “I’ve been so impressed by the skill and passion for the game displayed by these young players. They may be at the start of their rugby journeys but many are already living and breathing the values of our game like respect and teamwork.

“Competitions like this really benefit the future of our sport.  The playing experience and environment helps young players grow and develop into the next generation of players.”

Cleve RFC coach Nick Bull said: “It’s been really good. It’s very well organised.

“Everyone’s in good spirits, it’s nice. They loved having the Bears guys come down.

“Overall we are really impressed.”

Dings Crusaders coach Gary Morton said: “It’s really good. There’s been great team play, it’s well organised and it’s really nice having the Bears players here, the kids love it.”

Other clubs taking part ranged from Frampton Cotterell in South Gloucestershire and Whitehall in Bristol to Wellington in Somerset and Newbury in Berkshire.

More than 125,000 children have taken part in the Defender Rising Stars Festival since 2008, with some going on to play professionally.
