DOWNEND Flyers are excited to have kicked off the football season on a high.
All of our home games went ahead as scheduled, despite uncertainty in the lead-up to the season after Johnsons Road was heavily fly-tipped just a week before kick-off.
After a challenging few weeks, it has been fantastic to see our players back where they belong — on the football pitch — and what outstanding football has been played across the club!
One of the highlights has been watching our brand-new Under-18s team take to the pitch for the first time.
Facing stern opposition from a travelling Evesham side, our players showed tremendous ability, determination and composure. It was a hugely proud moment for Downend Flyers to see our first-ever U18 team competing at such a high level.
With the talent within this group, the club has high hopes for their future, and it is exciting to think that we could be watching the foundations of our future women’s first team.
At the other end of the age spectrum, the FA’s introduction of 3v3 football for the youngest age groups has been a huge success. Smaller-sided games give young players significantly more involvement, more touches of the ball and more opportunities to make decisions for themselves. With fewer players on the pitch, there is nowhere to hide — encouraging confidence, creativity, movement, passing, communication and problem-solving. Most importantly, it keeps young players actively involved and having fun.
There is a fantastic standard of adult female football being played across Downend Flyers, with our women’s First Team, Reserve Team, A Team and Under-18s all providing brilliant opportunities for players to develop and compete.
Join us at Pomphrey Hill or Johnsons Road for our home fixtures and support some fantastic female football – bring the family, bring your friends and be part of something special.
The football doesn’t have to end at the final whistle. We love heading to the Pomphrey Hill Sports Bar afterwards for a drink, a debrief and, naturally, a detailed discussion about the tactics — because everyone is an expert after 90 minutes!
