STUDENTS, staff and parents at Downend School took part in an event to recognise the diversity of the school community as part of Pride Month.
The event in June celebrated the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and included work undertaken by students exploring the LGBT+ theme in lessons.
Guests at the event were invited to make badges, wear rainbows, and some of the students’ work on display.
The soundtrack to the event was provided by DJ Jeff, a student DJ.
A bake sale was held, which raised funds for a local LGBT+ charity.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion lead Rachael Corns said: “It is so important to show all our students they are valued. We want to make sure everyone feels like they have a voice at our school and that they are included.
“The event was so unbelievably lovely – it was great for the students who came to see the majority of staff in attendance – it’s important for them to see that level of support, as we understand this can be a challenging time for them.”
Pride Month is marked each June in the UK with events including parades, festivals, educational activities and community gatherings to encourage acceptance, raise awareness and celebrate the diversity and contributions of LGBT+ people, their history and struggles for equality.
Emma Jukes, of the school’s community council, said: “Downend School aims to keep advancing their curriculum to ensure that diverse voices are heard across all subjects and looks forward to hosting another Pride event next year.”
