Flyers live up to their name

SEPTEMBER marked the start of the football season for the girls and women in purple, as the teams at Downend Flyers kicked off their campaigns.

Now firmly established as the largest all-female football club in the South West, the 23 girls’ and three women’s teams are looking forward to great success in the 2025/26 season.

The women’s sides have most definitely got off to a flyer, the first team winning their first two games under head coach Dean Giles.

On the opening day they came through a tricky FA Cup tie at Cheltenham Saracens to set up a trip to Forest Green Rovers in the next round.

They followed up this victory with an entertaining 4-2 win away in the league at newly-promoted AFC Brislington, with Yas West bagging a hat-trick.

Meanwhile the reserves have also won their first game of the season, ending the right side of a 2-1 encounter at City of Gloucester.

Lastly, players on the women’s A team are still waiting to kick a ball in anger, following a brace of postponements, but the new coaching team are champing at the bit to get started.

In the club’s girls’ section, over 300 players from U7s all the way up to U16s have all started their seasons, and we all look forward to seeing those smiling faces at our Pomphrey Hill home.

The future’s bright, the future is purple!
