A PARK pavilion has been closed on health and safety grounds.
Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council has locked up the pavilion in Bromley Heath Park, off Queensholm Crescent, after it was condemned following a structural survey.
The survey was carried out after council staff raised concerns about the condition of the roof.
Parish clerk Kevin Spratt said: “We’ve had a check done on the structure and it wasn’t structurally safe.”
The parish council, which manages the building and park, will now liaise with South Gloucestershire Council to see what action now needs to be taken, with more expert checks set to be carried out.
The pavilion was being used as a workshop space by the Downend Men in Sheds group, which has now had to limit its activities to using the nearby containers.
John Lockwood, from the group, said: “We still are functioning, albeit on a greatly reduced basis, but are unable to take on any large projects until the matter is resolved.”
He appealed to anyone who knows of a space that can be used by the group, which has up to 20 men at its regular sessions using woodworking machinery, and has parking for up to ten vehicles, to get in touch at downendmensshed@gmail.com.
Mr Lockwood said: “Our work that has helped a number of local charities, schools, and indeed some of our present members that have had mental health issues, will continue in some format or other.”
The recently-installed defibrillator mounted on the outside of the pavilion remains accessible in case of medical emergencies.
