‘Dangerous’ speed marking is repainted

SPEED limit road markings outside Mangotsfield School have been repainted after the Voice alerted South Gloucestershire Council to safety concerns.

Driving instructor Richard Sweeting said he had contacted the council several times online to report the defective road marking on the 20mph section of Rodway Hill, which appeared to show a 30mph limit.

It is one of a series of roundels painted on the road to warn drivers about the 20mph limit, which is also signposted.

All of the roundels have faded since they were set down – but paint on one of those closest to the school entrance had worn away to expose the remains of a previous 30mph limit marking.

Richard said: “Using Fix My Street I reported to South Gloucestershire Council that the speed limit painted on the road surface is both incorrect and dangerous.

“As you can see from my photograph, the road marking clearly shows ’30’ when the legal speed is 20mph.

“This road marking is directly outside the main entrance to Mangotsfield School, making it more dangerous.

“I have been reporting this to the council for a few years.”

Richard said he most recently reported the issue to the council online on September 18.

Four days later he says he received a response saying: “We have looked at the speed roundels and they show 20mph, which is the correct speed limit outside the school.

“Although they are faded at present, they are correct and will be repainted as and when the maintenance team are in the area.”

He says he “received a similar reply last year”.

The Voice contacted the council on October 16 to alert them to Richard’s concerns.

The following day a council spokesperson said: “We have raised this as a priority and will repaint the road markings with the correct 20mph limit as soon as possible.”

On October 18 Richard said the 20mph markings had been repainted at the site, which is opposite the car parking area for Rodway Common, as shown in the Voice’s picture, taken the following day.
