Bridge is on track

NATIONAL Highways says the new bridge to carry the A432 over the M4 is on course to open in the “late spring”.

A series of six overnight closures of the motorway took place in the first week of January, to remove casings for some of the concrete parts of the bridge structure.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “We have made positive progress on the new bridge, with all the concrete formwork and temporary edge protection removed during the recent overnight closures.

“Moving forward, there will be some overnight closures towards the end March to change the traffic management and allow for the central concrete barrier on the M4 to be reinstated.

“We will also be undertaking earthworks and other work on the abutments to move the bridge towards completion, before reconnecting it to the existing A432.

“All work is weather dependent, but we are on course to reopen the bridge in the late spring.”

The old bridge next to the Wick Wick roundabout closed in July 2023 when an inspection discovered “accelerated deterioration and cracking” in the concrete.
