Awards celebrate ‘remarkable people’

SOME of the “unsung heroes” who keep community organisations across South Gloucestershire going have been honoured with awards.

Volunteers for Staple Hill-based organisations were among the 30 individuals and groups to receive a Chair’s Community Award at a ceremony at the end of January.

Recipients included community well-being projects, youth support groups and environmental projects.

Among them was Colin Bracey, who organises the fundraising Friends of Page Park calendar and the photo competition to choose the images for it every year.

His citation said: “Colin’s leadership in producing and selling the Friends of Page Park calendar has created a successful fundraising initiative that engages the community and supports improvements to the park.”

There were two awards for Staple Hill & District Royal British Legion.

Vice-chair Di Roberts received an individual Community Hero award for her outstanding dedication to the organisation.

Her citation said: “Diane is a dedicated Royal British Legion volunteer, whose leadership and tireless community work have ensured the success of Staple Hill’s Remembrance events and preserved vital local groups, making her a respected cornerstone of the community.”

The branch itself also received an award, which Diane collected along with chair Ian Campbell.

The citation said: “The Staple Hill & District Branch of the Royal British Legion has spent 100 years supporting veterans and fostering community spirit through remembrance events, the Poppy Appeal, and volunteer-led outreach across South Gloucestershire.”

The awards are held every year by South Gloucestershire Council to recognise and thank local volunteers who give up their time to help others, in a ceremony hosted and sponsored by South Gloucestershire & Stroud College.

They were presented by the council’s chair, Staple Hill & Mangotsfield councillor Katie Cooper, along with SGS chief executive and principal David Withey.

Cllr Cooper said: “It is a privilege to recognise the remarkable people who contribute so much to our communities.

“Their kindness, energy and commitment bring genuine benefit to residents across South Gloucestershire, often without seeking any recognition in return.

“Their actions make a hugely positive and lasting difference to the lives of residents across South Gloucestershire, and I want to thank each of them for their kindness and selfless contributions.
